DEFINITION: Site in east-central Java where the first Homo erectus fossil skull was found and the first recorded pre-Neanderthal human fossil find. The human remains found in the 1890s included a skull cap, some teeth and five leg bones. The Middle Pleistocene fauna of Java, c 1.3 million-500,000 BP, is also named for Trinil. They overlie deposits of the Djetis faunal zone, which are about 1,600,000 years old. Djetis deposits have also yielded the fossil remains of hominids that have been related to the australopithecines or to Homo erectus or Homo habilis; these remains have been assigned the class Meganthropus palaeojavanicus.
