sun temple
CATEGORY: structure
DEFINITION: Religious building constructed by kings of the 5th Dynasty of Egypt for worshipping the sun god Re. They resemble the pyramid complexes of the same period, with valley temple and causeway leading to the Upper Temple. Six sun temples are known, but on those at Abusir and Abu Gurab have been found. Nyuserre, sixth king of the 5th dynasty is primarily known for his sun temple at Abu Gurab (Abu Jirab) in Lower Egypt. The temple plan, like that built by Userkaf (the first king of the 5th dynasty), consisted of a valley temple, causeway, gate, and temple court, which contained an obelisk (the symbol of Re) and an alabaster altar. Though impressive in size, Nyuserre's pyramid was exceeded both in height and in length by his sun temple, indicating the unusual prominence of the cult of Re during the 5th Dynasty.
